Why should I be worried about herbal teas during pregnancy?

Why should I be worried about herbal teas during pregnancy? Pregnant women can drink herbal tea, however, it is best to be cautious. Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not regulated herbs, there’s no concrete research but there is some evidence that shows it isn’t completely safe. It all depends on the type of herbal tea you wish to have. The ingredients in many can be toxic if taken in large amounts. Some herbal teas like ginger, chamomile, mint, raspberry, are classified safe teas. But teas like blue and black cohosh, kava, hibiscus, comfrey, goldenseal, aren’t. The ones that are not safe are believed to have abortifacients that trigger miscarriage and preterm birth. They can also lead to several present or future developmental problems in the baby. However, most reputed tea brands always have a label that declare its safety levels. Always, remember to take the ones that are labelled as safe for consumption, and that too in moderation.
