Chamomile is a medicinal herb that has been in use since centuries in the ancient Egypt, Greece & Rome. It has little white flowers that are dried and steeped in hot water to make a healthful cup of chamomile tea. What makes chamomile tea one of the most popular herbal teas across the world? And is it safe to consume it during pregnancy?

Chamomile tea has analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in relieving pain, fighting infections as well as reducing inflammation. It also possesses antihistamine, antioxidant, and antispasmodic properties, so it can fight free radicals, ward off allergies, boost the immune system and relieve muscle tension and spasms. Drinking a cup of chamomile tea first thing in the morning can relieve the symptoms of morning sickness in an expecting mom. It aids in digestion, eases constipation, calms the nerves and prevents gum disease.

However, chamomile tea is not considered safe during pregnancy as it can cause uterine contractions and lead to miscarriage. You may use chamomile essential oil topically in the second and third trimester as the baby is more developed. But do consult your doctor about herbs safe to use during pregnancy.
